Track selection Christmas Bonus Three Wise Men Edition, in three courses:
“We Free Kings” (based loosely on the Christmas Carol, swings) >
“You Did It, You Did It” > (Hot low down and dirty)
“Haunted Melody” > (Cool ballad)
Artists
Roland Kirk (ts, mzo, str, fl, siren) Richard Wyands (p) Art Davis (b) Charlie Persip (d)Recorded at Nola’s Penthouse Sound Studios, NYC, August 16, 1961
Music
Roland Kirk, blind multi-instrumentalist, here at the age of twenty five, with his very distinctive sound on a range of saxophones and unusual vocal-driven flute of frenetic intensity. A precursor to the much more tame Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull? But on two feet.
Vinyl Stuff
Mercury original UK pressing, 1961, a fine sounding record from a label which seemed to plough its own furrow, with a narrow selection of artists.
Collectors Corner
An iconic record that chanced to turn up in the new arrivals in the shape of its original UK release. More usual too see it in the new reissues section, 180 gram vinyl, and this was the first I had seen in the flesh. Simple decision, buy now, listen later. Seemed a good Christmas choice.

Sorry my mistake My UK issue number is MMC14126
I have the UK mono MMC14146. Are you showing the French Mercury copy?
Happy Christmas to you…
I just bought a copy of this LP 2 days ago–orig Mercury Stereo. Looking forward to giving it a spin.
Excellent choice, if I may say so.
I’m not normally a flute fan but Kirks sheer enthusiasm has won me over.
Ah, the man who became Rhasaan Roland Kirk. And who released an album called “Rip, Rig and Panic”. No idea what the R, R&P album is like, but the band of the same name from the early 1980’s were excellent.
I see this “Free Kings” album has a track called “Blues for Alice”. Odd. I’ve just been listening to “Blues for Allah” by The Grateful Dead. Funny old world.
Happy Christmas.

And a Happy Christmas to you Guy. Here’s to some HiFi Heavy Lifting in the New Year – Cheers!
