The Milestone jazz recording label was founded in 1966 by Orrin Keepnews and Dick Katz in New York City. Keepnews was previously co-founder of Riverside Records with Bill Grauer, however when Riverside eventually filed for bankrpcy around 1964, Keepnews found a new partner and launched Milestone.

The company survived independently for several years, attracting many established jazz artists who had been cut loose by new owners of previously independent jazz labels – Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Nat Adderley, Bobby Timmons, and newcomers like Gary Bartz and Flora Purim.

Milestone was eventually swallowed up by expansion-minded Fantasy Records in 1972 along with Prestige. Both then largely disappeared into the creative turmoil that was Los Angeles.

Label Designs

Milestone initially ran with both a mono series – catalogue number MLP #### – and a stereo series, MSP ####. Only a few titles are found in the mono series, which would seem to have been rapidly discontinued. The man purpose of mono at this time was radio station play, but stereo eventually became the sole format.

MONO (1966) MLP series

Other titles in the mono series appear with coloured labels similar to those in stereo

STEREO (MSP series)

Chronologically, the majority of early releases in the 9000 stereo series appear on the solid green label, followed by a series of releases on the solid blue label, then more on the yellow/pink quadrant label. Many titles went on to be repressed during the short life of the label 1966-72, and some titles appear on all three labels, prompting the question “Which is first?”

1. Green label, silver-fill black outline M logo –

appears 1966-7 early titles

2. Blue label, no-fill silver outline M logo;

appears on slightly later new releases around 1968 and later repressings

3. Yellow/ pink offset quadrants, brown solid M logo

Bob Djukic claims this was first Milestone label. Maybe first label for some titles, also used for repressing of other titles, and later new releases.

The use of a solid-fill M logo is consistent with later rather than earlier design, which used an outline M with no fill.

My own view yellow/pink is a later Milestone label.

Superb quality engineering and mastering, quality pressings, essential source of Joe Henderson’s “Blackness” series of titles. (Etching pictures will follow)

4. Light brown label, solid fill dark brown M logo (circle and two inward leaning ascenders):

1972 onwards, distributed by Fantasy Records

Catalogue number now simple M- prefix.

  2. The yellow/purple labels seem to be a variation of the yellow/brown labels. My version Of Joe Henderson´s Power to the People from 1970 has the yellow/purple labels. It seems to be more likely, that the blue labels are first.

  3. The brown label (the colors, according to a label sheet blank I’d studied at Sony Music archives) consisted of Pantone 173 for the brown and Pantone 201 for the ‘M’. That pressing – and the label typesetting – were by Columbia Records’ Santa Maria, CA plant.
